Mens Division 1

Australind 4 v Dalyellup 3

Dalyellup played away from home for only the second time this season as they travelled to fellow Division 1 strugglers Australind. Both sides fancied their chances for a rare three points, and so it was no surprise that the match was an open affair. Both keepers were called into action on a few occasions following corners and free kicks, but it was the Australind keeper who was the first to collect the ball out of the back of his net. Twenty-five minutes into the half Jon Wright had the ball at his feet 30 yards out on the right of midfield and, after teammates suggested he have a crack, he duly did so, letting fly a rocket that soared past a number of players and above the keeper’s head into the goal. One-nil to Rangers and ten minutes later they doubled their advantage when the hapless Blues keeper shanked his goal kick. It went straight to left midfielder Craig McManus, who, sensing the goalie was off his line, smashed it back in the direction from whence it came, over the head of the keeper and into the onion bag.

Dalyellup were buoyant at being 2-0 up for the first time in two years and continued to play nice passing football. New recruit Shan Richardson was working hard in the middle, with the ever impressive Danny Mullins running his heart out. The rock solid back four were their usual reliable self, particularly Alex Park and Bryan Conway who were having good games despite both having the flu. Unfortunately for Rangers, John Cook injured his hamstring and took no further part in the match. In the last minute of the half, James Turbitt was tackled in his own penalty area, causing him to stumble and lose the ball out of play. Instead of a free kick, a corner was awarded to the Blues and they made the most of their good fortune, with their big centre back having a free header towards goal. The ball hit the crossbar and bounced straight down and while Turbitt tried to clear it off the line, an Australind player bravely got his head on the ball on slotted it away. Two-one at the half time break.

It was a different Dalyellup who came out for the second half. They had lost their passing game and Australind took over the ascendency. They equalised five minutes into the second half following some lazy defending, and took the lead five minutes after that with some nice link up play. Dalyellup’s back four were regularly under pressure and eventually Australind found a fourth goal when keeper Jason Gick was beaten at his near post. With fifteen to go and with the Blues possibly taking their foot off the pedal, Dalyellup started to regain possession and pushed forward, creating a number of chances. With five minutes to go, Rangers won a free kick, which Rafa Fuja got a head to but it ricocheted off the crossbar. Fortunately, McManus was unmarked at the back post and managed to head it into the goals for his second of the day.

Shortly after, the full time whistle blew for a 4-3 win to Australind. Had it not been for the disappointing 20 minutes after half time, Dalyellup could have had a real chance to win the match, but the result proved the old adage that you need to play for the full 90 minutes. Still, after a 9-0 thrashing the previous week, the players were generally well satisfied with the effort.
