Junior Coaches Coordinator's Corner

There are many websites that have coaching hints and we encourage you to investigate them to augment what we can provide. eg http://www.kidsfirstsoccer.com, http://eteamz.active.com/soccer/instruction/tips , www.and-again.com and http://www.footy4kids.co.uk . Some sites are better than others and it depends on what skills you are targeting for your team.

Don't forget that it generally takes three weeks of concentrated use to learn a new skill. So, often it is better to drill the players for three weeks on particular skills, using subtle variations in drills and games that use the skill, than it is to chop and change from week to week.

Furthermore, never forget that there is no substitute for basic skills performed with a high degree of reliability. Teaching kids special moves may add to the excitement and spectacle of games but they do not replace basic skills such as long, accurate kicking, precision passing with every part of the boot or ball control. Coaching your players to utilise either foot with equal facility is a challenge that you should be prepared to embrace. It will not only make them more complete players, much harder for opposition teams to counter, but it will create pride in the skill they have acquired.

Teaching skills is an exercise in incremental improvement.  Some kids can barely kick the ball to start with.  You will need to design or incorporate games into your coaching that give them many opportunities to have success with their kicking and gradually it will improve.  By being enthusiastic, encouraging and making it fun you will build their motivation to play more often, both by themselves and with their friends and ultimately they will teach themselves most of the skills required to play and enjoy the game.

See Football West website for details of the coaching development pathways.  Country Coastal Junior Soccer Association will liaise with Football West to ensure there are opportunities for junior coaches to get training and become accredited.  Dalyellup FC will cover the fees for any such training that you complete.

Tips for New Coaches
Each season new coaches will volunteer their time and energy, especially in the 6s to 8s age groups - but where to start?  See below for some guidelines on  being a new coach:

Try to reduce the player to coach ratio. Eg Parent assistants or ask the U17 boys and girls to help and demonstrate.
Make having fun the #1 priority
.
Don’t focus on having star players, but work on teamwork instead
.
Keep on reminding your players to stay away from each other and play games at training that reward this behaviour
. Eg Keep-away games
Rotate your players through all positions until at least U15s
.
Praise your players when they do the things you want to see and have the players praise themselves
.
Don't be too hard on your players and remember that mistakes are not bad things.  Players who aren't making mistakes are either not being challenged or not playing hard enough. Players should never feel afraid to make a mistake.  It's an important way that humans learn.
Before the season starts set some ground rules with the parents and players on your team
.
Use predominantly small-sided games when training younger children
.  Allow for several short rests during training with children between 6 and 10 years old.
Seek some level of coaching education.
